Entrance Feeder

5.00

This classic entrance feeder for bees is commonly called a Boardman feeder. An entrance feeder is the most popular style for all beekeepers as it is easy to use, low maintenance, affordable and easy to monitor.

Designed to be used with a standard (not wide mouth) canning or mason jar, it’s easy to fill a quart, 1/2 gallon or gallon size mason jar with sugar water or water and feed it to your bees. Check out our short, half-gallon feeder jars that fit these feeders perfectly. This feeder comes with a removable and reusable lid with pre-punched holes to allow the bees to drink from. The bees can plug the holes occasionally, so always check to make sure they are clear.

To use the entrance feeder, fill a canning jar with sugar syrup or water. Pop lid out of molded plastic entrance feeder and screw tightly onto the jar. Invert the entrance feeder and press over the aluminum lid. Invert entire jar/feeder combo and slide flush into the entrance. If the screen on the bottom board prevents the entrance feeder from butting flush against the box, you will need to pry the box up slightly to slide the entrance feeder in.The Boardman feeder is designed to be used at the entrance, but it can also be used inside the hive when rested on top of the inner cover or frames. When using the feeder this way, you will need at least a medium box (like this) to surround the jar.

While not necessary, we do recommend using two entrance feeders at a time. The biggest negative of the entrance feeders is the relatively small volume sugar water a quart jar can hold. But using two entrance feeders will give your bees at least 1/2 gallon of syrup at a time, reducing the number of trips needed to refill the jars.

The entrance feeder can slide into the slot in our entrance reducer, allowing an entrance reducer and feeder to be used at the same time. This is helpful for young colonies with low populations. Our feeder may not be compatible with entrance reducers from other companies.
