The EZPZ Brood Breaker Cage helps control Varroa mites by creating an artificial brood break. By caging your queen for 2 weeks (17 days is even better) and then treating with oxalic acid one week after release, you can effectively disrupt the mite’s life cycle and improve colony health.

Detailed Description

The Brood Breaker Cage mounts on the top bar of a Langstroth frame. It can be used on its own or with bees drawing comb around it. When placed in the center of the brood nest, the queen remains safe while workers continue to care for her and spread her pheromones throughout the colony.

For mite control, cage the queen for 14–17 days. One week after release—when her last brood has emerged but before new brood is capped—apply a full dose of oxalic acid vapor. To release, simply remove the plug and return the frame to the hive; she will walk out on her own. For maintenance, the back of the cage can be carefully slid open.

This method also works for requeening: after the brood break period, remove the old queen, wait one day, and introduce the new queen in a cage. With the colony hopelessly queenless, acceptance rates improve dramatically.
