When running foundationless frames, bees need a clear guide to begin building comb in a straight line. Starter strips provide that guide by creating a defined edge along the top bar of the frame.

Without a starter strip, bees may begin building comb at uneven angles, leading to cross-combing that can make inspections and frame removal difficult. By using starter strips, you give your bees a consistent starting point, encouraging them to build a straight sheet of comb within the frame.
