Detailed Description

The EZPZ Swarm Cell Harvester Kit is a complete system built around the EZPZ Swarm Cell Cage and designed for no-graft queen rearing using swarm cells. Swarm cells can produce queens, and this kit is intended to help beekeepers safely collect, protect, and manage those cells through emergence, evaluation, and introduction.

This kit received the American Beekeeping Federation’s Bee Practical Award for innovation.

Ripe swarm cells may be carefully removed using the included hobby knife fitted with a #18 chisel blade. Cells that are Day 13 or older are recommended for removal to avoid sensitive development stages. Once removed, cells are placed into the cradle of the Swarm Cell Cage. If part of a cell is exposed, it may be positioned against the wall of the cage to close the opening.

Swarm Cell Cages may be placed in the included tray for handling or incubation. Alternatively, the Deep Banker Bar may be snapped into a standard deep Langstroth frame and placed in a strong colony. If used in a queenright colony, placement above a queen excluder is recommended. The Banker Bar should be checked daily.

Once queens emerge, they may be evaluated and transferred using the included transfer adapter into EZPZ Queen Cages for introduction. Candy Caps are used for caging, and queens may be introduced by placing the cage between frames near brood at a slight downward angle.

The syringe and blunt needle are used to add small amounts of honey and water into the troughs at the bottom of each cage if desired.
