Our 10-Frame Double Deep Box Hive Kit is the foundation of a strong, healthy apiary and includes all the essential woodenware needed to start a colony of honey bees. This traditional setup gives your bees plenty of space to build brood, store food, and expand naturally. The deep boxes serve as the primary brood area — where the queen lays her eggs and the bees raise their young — while additional medium boxes (sold separately) can later be added for surplus honey production.

Crafted from durable cypress wood, this kit is built to last through seasons of use. Cypress is naturally rot-resistant, smooth, and stable — providing exceptional protection against moisture and weather. Each frame features double-waxed foundation, which helps bees accept and draw comb faster and more evenly.

Detailed Description

This complete cypress Langstroth hive kit includes all the core woodenware required for a new colony. The two deep boxes provide ample space for brood rearing and food storage, forming the main living area for the bees. Medium honey supers (sold separately) can be added later as your colony expands.

You can choose to order your kit unassembled, assembled, or assembled and painted. When assembled, each piece is built using Titebond weatherproof glue and heavy-duty staples to ensure long-lasting durability. Painted kits include a white primer and UV-resistant finish for outdoor protection.

Since 2016, Foxhound Bee Company has offered this popular 10-frame kit to both beginner and experienced beekeepers. Every piece is precision-cut and made from solid cypress, ensuring it fits perfectly and stands up to years of use. The double-coated beeswax foundation is a key feature that sets our kits apart from standard thinly waxed foundations offered elsewhere — bees build comb more readily and consistently on it.

Each of our kits is designed to be the space where the queen can lay eggs, and the bees can store fresh honey to eat over the winter. This kit does not include the additional honey boxes or honey supers (What is a Honey Super?) needed for the bees to store excess honey for the beekeeper to harvest from.

While this kit provides the full brood chamber setup, most beekeepers add at least one medium honey super during the first or second season. If a queen excluder is used, it should be placed above the brood boxes included in this kit and below the honey supers.
