Comb Honey Cassettes
Comb honey is one of the most unique and sought-after products from the hive. Unlike extracted honey, comb honey is presented exactly as the bees made it—sealed inside edible beeswax comb. These comb honey cassettes make it possible for beekeepers to produce and present comb honey in ready-to-sell boxes that showcase both the honey and the natural wax.
Key Features and Benefits
- Natural presentation: Honey is sold directly in the comb with edible beeswax.
- Pine construction: Made from pine and cut to fit standard Langstroth frame.
- Easy assembly: Finger-jointed design fits together without nails, glue, or screws.
- Foundation slots: Two slots allow for adding thin wax foundation strips as a guide.
- Frame compatibility: Medium frames hold 4 cassettes; deep frames hold 8 cassettes.
- Disposable sections: Wooden cassettes can be sold or given with finished comb honey.
Detailed Description
The Comb Honey Cassette system is designed to make comb honey production straightforward for beekeepers. Each cassette is assembled into a rectangle and placed inside a standard Langstroth wooden frame, where bees will draw and fill natural comb honey during a nectar flow.
Each cassette is made with precisely cut interlocking joints that hold their shape securely without collapsing and without the need for glue or nails. A thin sheet of beeswax foundation can be slid into one or both slots to serve as a starter guide for the bees, encouraging straight and complete comb building.
Sizing:
- Medium cassette: 5-1/16" x 4-3/16" x 1-1/2"
- Deep cassette: 3-7/8" x 4-3/16" x 1-1/2"
Each medium frame holds 4 cassettes, while each deep frame holds 8 cassettes. Note that medium and deep cassettes are not interchangeable.
Once filled, the comb honey sections are harvested by popping the wooden cassettes out of the frame, placing them into a clear bag, and freezing them before consumption (to protect from pests). After freezing, they can be packaged in boxes for sale or gifting.
These wooden cassettes—commonly referred to as “basswood sections”—offer a simple, effective alternative to other systems such as Ross Rounds or Half Hogg Cassettes.
