Detailed Description
A honey refractometer measures how much moisture or water is present in honey or other syrups. This model operates using the Brix scale and provides quick readings with only a drop of honey placed on the prism surface.
To use, place a small honey sample on the screen and close the cover to spread it into a thin layer. Hold the refractometer up to a bright light and look through the adjustable eyepiece. The point where the two colors meet on the scale indicates the moisture content. After reading, wipe the screen clean with the included cloth.
ATC (Automatic Temperature Compensation) is built into the refractometer, helping ensure accurate readings even when sample temperatures vary. For best results, calibrate the refractometer using fluid at the same temperature as the honey sample.
Beekeepers should harvest honey only when moisture content is below 18%. Honey harvested at or above 18% moisture may ferment. Even properly harvested honey can absorb moisture from the air if not stored in a sealed container.
Calibration can be done using the included calibration fluid or extra virgin olive oil. Place a drop on the prism, close the cover, and adjust the calibration screw until the reading measures 72% solids or 28% water. Distilled water may also be used and should measure approximately 1%.
Beekeepers commonly test honey before harvesting by taking multiple readings from different supers, or after extraction prior to bottling.
